Back in 1989 I wrote a song for an Antioch Coffee House (in Corry Hall Basement no less) called ‘Jim Henson Sold Out To Disney’. I have the full lyrics somewhere but to summarize it basically went something along the lines of…
[play arpeggio descending minor chord progression stolen from Stray Cat Strut… slow and trinkling, super typical boring folky lah de dah tune]
Life was great.. I was happy
Then I saw this picture in the paper
had the muppets.. aww cute..
but next to them… no wait.. this is just wrong..
Mickey Mouse & Donald Duck .. AIIGH [Screaming at top of my lungs]
[strum guitar hard.. like as in break the strings hard, triple the speed, and do my best acoustic punk chorus of;]
“JIM HENSON SOLD OUT TO DISNEY! DOESN’T THAT REALLY SUCK?”
(crowd in Corry Hall yells back, with fists pumping “YEAH!”)
“JIM HENSON SOLD OUT TO DISNEY NOW KERMIT WORKS FOR DONALD DUCK!”
it then went on to paint horrible combos of Animal and Snow White, Gonzo and Goofy, etc.
I could have stopped there.. but no.. it then continued the theme with the possibility of Disney (then a joke) buying up all sorts of other shows and then popular comics like Bloom County and ‘The Far Side’.
THEY’RE TRYING TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD!
Then the song ended with;
“It’s not going to take them long because… “.
[Play chorus of ‘It’s a small world after all’]
Seemed to go over well at the show, and the people yelling back ‘YEAH!’ surprised me.. wow.. interactive folk/punk.. go figure… Apparently none of my friends that I polled today remember me playing this song, but it happened, trust me. But I digress.. suffice to say that when Disney even bought little bits of the muppets then I was upset then…
Well imagine my surprise.. nay.. HORROR today when I saw this on muppets.com
[Brace yourselves]
