ARRR! Shantey CD’s

This week I mailed off the first batch of the ‘Trio O’ Sea Shantey & Drinking Song CD’s’ to the folks who requested them from my comments on this entry on anarqueso‘s journal. Note this offer still stands for anyone else willing to trade mixes or really anything in exchange for these CDs.

I also mailed off one set of the Antioch Mix CDs I offered in an earlier note, and since they acknowledged it’s arrivals the Shanties must have arrived also.

I did the minimalist distribution of these CDs, just scribbled their title with a sharpie on the CD and stuffed them in a box. No notes, no fancy liner notes with color pictures of drunk sailors at the mizzen, just boring CDs.

So I’m posting this here with the track listings and a brief description of each CD. Actually this is a slightly annotated copy of a note I sent anarqueso a few weeks ago. I’m posting this so I can e-mail the strangers I’ve sent unlabeled CDs to a note where they can read more about the unusual music that will soon be spewing from their speakers 🙂

I may elaborate on this and do the level of detail I did on the Antioch mixes at a later date, explaining where I found each shanty, why I like that version over others etc. but that’s wicked time consuming. And also, it’s more fun keeping it mysterious, not knowing who or why the next track was included.

If anyone wants more detail on any track or musician, feel free to ask.

Below are the track listings a brief summary of each CD;

Billy Jonas

There’s an acoustic singer-songwriter that Emily and I really really like, Billy Jonas. He does both children’s music as well as “all ages” or “general audience” music (whatever you want to call that), and he’s hard to describe (See the picture to the left for a visual clue). Both his musical style and delivery, as well as his fun lyrics make him a real treat to see & hear.

In the extended entry below is a copy of the e-mail I just sent out to some friends that describes his music and performances. But really.. can’t recommend him enough, especially his kids shows.

If he’s playing in your area, and if you have kids between 2 and 13, go see his kids show. If you have older kids or it’s just you and some friends, see his ‘regular’ show. Trust me, it’s worth it.
